#2 PSYCHEDELICS & THERAPIES: Microdosing & Coaching

Microdosing and Coaching: A Synergy for Personal and Professional Development

Introduction

As a personal and professional development coach for several years, I have been helping my clients achieve their goals and overcome their challenges. A few years ago, I began exploring the integration of microdosing into my coaching practices in the Netherlands, and the results have been remarkably positive. In this article, I share my experiences and observations on how microdosing can enrich coaching sessions.

What is Microdosing?

Microdosing involves consuming sub-perceptual doses of substances like certain analogs of LSD or truffles (psilocybin/magic mushrooms), generally around 1/10 to 1/20 of a recreational dose. At these levels, users do not experience hallucinations or perceptible effects but rather benefit from improved mood, concentration, and creativity.

Benefits of Microdosing for Coaching

1. Enhanced Mental Clarity and Concentration

For my clients, microdosing has often led to increased mental clarity and concentration, allowing them to better assimilate the concepts and strategies discussed during our coaching sessions. Improved concentration also enables them to follow the proposed challenges more effectively and remain motivated and engaged in their goals.

Anecdote: One of my clients, Jan, had difficulty staying focused on his long-term professional goals. After starting microdosing, he noticed a significant improvement in his ability to concentrate during our sessions. This helped him structure his plans better and progress more rapidly towards his objectives.

2. Reduced Anxiety and Improved Mood

Microdosing can reduce anxiety and improve mood, creating a mental environment more conducive to reflection and learning. For my clients, this means greater openness and receptivity to coaching advice and techniques.

Anecdote: Anouk, one of my clients, suffered from paralyzing anxiety that prevented her from making important decisions. After starting regular microdosing, she became more relaxed and open during our sessions, allowing her to discuss her problems freely and find solutions with greater clarity.

3. Stimulated Creativity

Microdosing is known to stimulate creativity and divergent thinking. For my clients, this can facilitate generating new ideas and solutions to the challenges they face, whether in their professional or personal lives. For me, increased creativity allows me to propose innovative strategies and actions tailored to each client's specific needs.

Anecdote: During a session with Femke, a struggling entrepreneur, we used microdosing to stimulate her creativity. She managed to come up with innovative ideas for her business, which reignited her enthusiasm and commitment to her project.

4. Enhanced Emotional Connection and Empathy

Microdosing can increase empathy and emotional connection, essential in a coaching relationship. For my clients, this means a better connection with their emotions, helping to identify and work through emotional blockages.

5. Increased Presence in the Moment

Being fully present in the moment is crucial for coaching. Microdosing can help maintain this presence by reducing mental distractions and promoting total immersion in the sessions. This heightened presence allows for a better appreciation and experience of each moment, making interactions more meaningful and productive.

Anecdote: With Stephen, a high-pressure executive, microdosing was a valuable tool to help him relax and be more present. This transformed the quality of our sessions, enabling him to focus on his long-term goals with a clearer vision.

Scientific Research on Microdosing

Recent studies show that microdosing can have significant beneficial effects. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology revealed that participants who took microdoses of psilocybin reported improved mood, reduced anxiety, and increased creativity. Another study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology showed that microdosing LSD could improve concentration and reduce stress levels in participants.

Practical Integration of Microdosing in Coaching

Ethics and Safety

One of the first considerations to address is ethics and safety. It is crucial to ensure that microdosing is practiced safely and responsibly. Clients must be informed of potential risks and side effects. Additionally, it is important to comply with local laws and regulations regarding the use of psychedelic substances.

Personalization of Coaching

Microdosing allows for greater personalization of coaching sessions. Coaches can adapt techniques and practices based on the specific effects experienced by the client under microdosing. For example, if a client finds themselves more creative and introspective, the coach can use exercises that leverage these states to deepen self-reflection and self-expression.

Integration with Other Wellness Practices

Microdosing can be integrated with other therapeutic and wellness practices such as meditation, mindful breathing, or yoga. These practices can enhance the positive effects of microdosing and create a holistic approach to personal development.

Monitoring and Evaluation

It is essential to implement monitoring protocols to assess the impact of microdosing on client progress. This can include journals where clients note their experiences and feelings, regular evaluations to measure progress, and dose adjustments if necessary.

Coach's Training and Knowledge

Coaches must be well-informed and trained on microdosing, its effects, and its possible interactions with other substances or medical conditions. In-depth knowledge allows guiding clients safely and effectively.

Building Trust

Microdosing can strengthen the trust relationship between coach and client. By creating a safe and open space to explore deep thoughts and emotions, coaches can help clients feel more comfortable and supported in their development journey.

Enhanced Self-Reflection

Microdosing can encourage deeper and more authentic self-reflection. Clients can use this state to examine their current beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, identify blockages and limiting patterns, and discover new perspectives and possibilities.

Inspirational Quotes

Joe Dispenza, a renowned neuroscience expert and author, states: "When you change your mind, you change your life." This perspective aligns perfectly with the idea that microdosing can help reconfigure thinking and stimulate personal development.

Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist and author, said: "Our beliefs are more powerful than our genes." Microdosing, by facilitating the questioning of limiting beliefs, can be a powerful tool for transforming self-perception and behavior.

Conclusion

Microdosing offers promising potential to enrich coaching, both for coaches and clients. By improving mental clarity, creativity, empathy, and the ability to focus on the present moment, microdosing can transform coaching sessions into more positive, productive, and effective experiences. However, it is crucial to practice microdosing responsibly and ethically, considering legal and safety considerations. By integrating this practice in an informed and conscious manner, coaching can become an even more powerful tool for personal and professional development.
